Science students at Clay high school will soon have a way to measure the wind and how much power it can produce. This grant-funded project will provide data on how well turbines produce power in the changeable wind environment near the lake.

Click to see larger image. St. Marys River: On this connecting channel between lakes Superior and Huron, critical pollutants include oils and greases, suspended solids, heavy metals and bacteria from several industrial sources along the river.

St. Clair River: Connecting lakes Huron and St. Clair, the shipping industry has been a primary source of pollution for the river.

Clinton River: Flowing into Lake St. Clair, half of the river's flow is treated wastewater from six municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Detroit River: Connecting lakes St. Clair and Erie, combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and municipal and industrial discharges are major sources of contaminants in the river.

Rouge River: Located in industrialized southeast Michigan, degradation factors include combined sewer overflows, nonpoint source pollution, and municipal and industrial discharges.

Niagara River (New York and Ontario): Considered an AOC in both Ontario and New York, this connecting channel between lakes Erie and Ontario is polluted by several industrial facilities, runoff, and combined sewer overflows (CSOs).Click to see larger image.

St. Lawrence River (Massena, NY and Cornwall, Ont.): Located in both Massena, N.Y., and Cornwall, Ont., contaminants from past industrial waste handling practices have created several hazardous waste sites.
