>ENVIRONMENT GROUPS TO RELEASE CITIZENS GUIDE TO DETROIT RIVER STATUS ASSESSMENT
>
>The International Joint Commission (IJC) has released a draft copy of it
first status assessment of a Great Lakes Area of Concern (AOC). A Citizens
Guide to the draft document of the Detroit River Status Assessment will be
released at a news conference called for 11:00am Wednesday June 25 at the
Citizens Environment Alliance (CEA) offices at 76 University Ave. West, Room
303. Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
>
>According to the IJC, it was their intention to focus this status
assessment on examining technological and institutional issues which
influence the restoration of beneficial uses of AOCs in the Great Lakes
basin. The fact that that this Status Assessment is a "draft" and is being
widely distributed for comments prior to completion is very converning. It
implies that positions taken by the IJC are subject to modification. This
calls into question whether any impact will be made by this Status
Assessment, particularly if it will be further weakened once the governments
respond to it.
>
>The clear need to highlight the strong points of the draft Status
Assessment as well as further clarify and elaborate on misrepresentations is
what has prompted the Citizens Environment Alliance of Southwestern
Ontario(CEA) and Downriver Citizens for a Safe Environment (DCSE) to produce
a Citizen's Guide to the Detroit River Status Assessment.
