The U.S. Supreme Court could decide as early as today if it will consider a lawsuit filed by Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox seeking immediate closure of the locks near Chicago to keep the invasive Asian carp out of Lake Michigan.

Stabenow spearheading Asian Carp control bill

With a $7 billion fishing industry and a $16 billion tourism and boating industry in the Great Lakes, Asian Carp are a potential disaster, but a long-term solution may be in the works. U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow has spearheaded, alongside Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland, a bill to temporarily close Chicago Canal Locks in an effort to stop Asian carp.

A UW-Sea Grant Institute fisheries specialist says the best way to stop Asian Carp from coming to Lake Michigan is to develop a complete ecological separation between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.
