What's New Celebrate Lake Superior Day July 20 Lake County News Chronicle (7/17) The Northland will celebrate Lake Superior the third week in July aimed at raising awareness and protection of our world-class resource. U.S. Energy Co. to face trial in Canada Environmental Protection (7/14) On July 7, the Ontario Court of Justice in Canada set a trial date in the prosecution of DTE Energy Co. The Michigan-based coal-fired power plant operator faces charges for polluting the St. Clair River, according to a press release from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Lake states unite against diversion demands Detroit Free Press (7/10) With the last of the Great Lakes states approving the Great Lakes Compact this week, the measure now goes to Congress. Advocates are hoping it could be ratified by Congress and signed by President Bush yet this year. Michigan governor signs Great Lakes compact The Associated Press (7/9) Michigan has become the last of the eight Great Lakes states to join a compact designed to protect the region's water. Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac (7/9) The 100th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac is less than two weeks away! Sailors and spectators alike will soon enjoy a once in a lifetime event. Spectacular pre-Race and post-Race parties are planned, topped off with fireworks on the Island. And millions around the world can follow the 100th Race through an innovative tracking system, all starting July 19. Granholm to sign lake protection law at Saugatuck's Oval Beach The Grand Rapids Press (7/8) Proving that water transcends politics, Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Wednesday will sign new Great Lakes protection legislation on a beach in the hometown of Republican Sen. Patricia Birkholz.
