Minnesota asks feds for another shot at wolves

The Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources today submitted a formal petition to the U.S. Department of the Interior asking the federal government to decide within 90 days on whether to take wolves in the Great Lakes region off the endangered species list.

Lesser known species, plants face extinction

Michigan's gray wolf may be getting the most attention, but it isn't the only species jumping on and off the endangered species list. Scientists say many other animals and plants face extinction in the Midwest. Development, habitat destruction and alien rivals are to blame.

A recent mid-winter survey conducted by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation indicates that the state’s bald eagle population may be at an all-time high since the state began its repopulation efforts more than 35 years ago.

Almost $2 million available to help endangered, threatened species in Great Lakes region

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced a request for project proposals under the Endangered Species Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Up to $1.85 million in grants is available for projects that benefit federally endangered, threatened, candidate or at-risk species.

Resolution to delist gray wolf passes House
Petoskey News-Review (2/24)
A resolution to delist the gray wolf in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan from the federal endangered species list passed the state House by an “Aye” vote of support on Tuesday afternoon.

The center's mission is "to preserve biological diversity among raptors and other avain species through medical treatment, scientific investigation, education, and management of wild populations."

Timber Wolf Alliance
Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute
TWA's mission is to promote and assist in achieving a sustainable population of timber wolves in the Great Lakes region, with emphasis on the Lake Superior basin.

Events
Kirtland's Warbler Festival
Celebrate the gradual return of the endangered Kirtland's Warbler and its home in the Jack Pine and AuSable River ecosystem. Kirtland Community College, named for the rare bird, is the host site for the festival, eight miles north of St. Helen, Mich.

Kirtland's Warbler Tours
Guided tours to Kirtland's warbler nesting areas (from May-June) will depart from the U.S. Forest Service Office in Mio, Mich., and from the Holiday Inn in Grayling, Mich.
